Volunteerism is a basic component and necessary part of the New LA vision. The school itself was created by the dedicated volunteer efforts of community members, education professionals, and parents. New LA strives to create an environment that not only fosters volunteer efforts on behalf of the school, but also helps to foster the spirit of volunteerism in our students. Each New LA family must volunteer a minimum of 20 hours to the school during each school year.
Family Council
New LA families form a Family Council that is responsible for parent involvement in school activities, advising New LA on any and all matters related to the strengthening of the New LA community, and fundraising when appropriate. The purpose of the Family Council is to support the school’s mission and educators, and engage parents in issues that affect the school, families, and children. Every enrolled family automatically is a member of this group and will be welcomed and encouraged to participate in meetings and activities. The Family Council sends a representative to attend Board Meetings and is responsible for ensuring communication between parents and the Board of Directors and New LA staff.
Specific Responsibilities of New LA Families
- Organize and coordinate school volunteers, specifically lunchtime assistance and field trip chaperoning.
- Work on ways New LA parents and families can get to know each other.
- Provide feedback to the executive director and the board.
Family Education Programs
The Family Council, in conjunction with the school director and teachers, prepares and participates in a series of educational programs through the year. These programs include presentations from our teachers and from outside experts on issues facing kids and parents today.
Monthly Coffees with the Director
New LA families are invited to a monthly coffee with the director. These coffees give families the opportunity to hear about what is going on at school, ask questions, raise concerns, and interact with other New LA families.
