Physical fitness and awareness of the human body is important to the health and well being of all students. This is achieved by providing a comprehensive Physical Education Curriculum. The PE curriculum focuses on developing an understanding of the correlation between mental and physical conditioning. This is measured by an individual’s commitment to setting and meeting personal goals and by the quality of their participation in team activities. Middle school PE begins with a well-designed warm—up program, which includes at least 5 minutes of stretching. The warm up is followed by a fitness segment, which includes resistance training and cardio-vascular exercise. The period concludes with team-oriented activities or dance instruction. Every New LA student receives two hours of physical education instruction per week.
New LA students also participate in a unique yoga program, focusing on body strength, mind-body connection, breathing, concentration, and personal focus. The yoga taught at New LA is designed for middle school students, is age-appropriate, and non-sectarian. New LA students receive one hour of yoga instruction per week.
